Auto Repairs in California

If your car is not running properly, you truly grasp its value and importance. Just getting through your day becomes a monumental task when your car is in need of repair. Unless you are accustomed to repairing your car by yourself, auto repair is best left to the professionals. If you do not actually know what you are doing, you can inflict way more damage to your car.

California auto repair is regulated. You want to find an auto body repair shop that is registered with the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). If the shop is registered, there will be a BAR sign prominently displayed. In California, all auto repair shops must be registered with the BAR.

Under BAR regulations, the automotive repair shop must give you a written estimate before beginning any work. You will be asked to sign this estimate. Be aware that your signature is legally binding and it indicates permission for the work to be completed.

If a mechanic hands you a blank invoice for auto body repair, do not sign it. Signing a blank invoice makes it easy for the shop to do whatever they want and charge you whatever they see fit.

If you are ever handed a blank invoice at an auto body repair shop, contact the BAR. California auto repair laws require shops to provide accurate, good faith estimates to consumers.

After the auto repair work is completed, you should also receive an invoice. The invoice should exactly, show what work was done to the vehicle and which parts were repaired or replaced.

If you request it, the California auto repair shop must return any parts they had to replace to you. An auto repair that requires replacing a part should prompt the mechanic to ask you if you want the old parts returned to you.

If you automatically know you want your old parts back, make that request when you sign the invoice.

If the part, which requires replacement, is under warranty, then the auto body repair shop needs to mail it back to the manufacturer. In this instance, they cannot return the part to you. However, they can produce it for your inspection.

Retain all auto repair receipts. This makes keeping your auto repair log up-to-date much simpler. Having your receipts also helps if you ever need to file a complaint with BAR.
